Understanding Privilege

Course Summary

In order to foster a positive work culture, employees need an awareness of privilege — privilege they witness and privilege they themselves hold.

This mini-course teaches employees to better recognize how privilege can impact our ideas and biases, the ways in which it might affect they way we’re treated, and the influence it wields on how we treat others in the workplace.

Why is this training important for the workplace?

Understanding one’s own privilege is essential for fostering empathy, awareness, and accountability in interpersonal and professional interactions. Recognizing the advantages and opportunities that come with one’s social identity — whether it be based on race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or other factors — helps individuals acknowledge the systemic inequalities that exist in society. By understanding their privilege, employees become more conscious of the barriers others face and work towards dismantling oppressive structures.
